What is Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)?

The Relationship Between Chiropractic and Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

In chiropractic care, the primary goal is to restore balance within the nervous system and optimize the overall function of the body. Among the many elements that influence this balance, one of the most important is the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

What Is Cerebrospinal Fluid?

Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear, colorless liquid that fills the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It serves several vital functions:

・Shock absorption: Cushions and protects the brain and spinal cord from external impact.

・Circulation and metabolism: Delivers nutrients to the brain and central nervous system while removing metabolic waste.

・Pressure regulation: Maintains stable intracranial pressure and supports neural function.

CSF is produced in the choroid plexus within the brain’s ventricles and circulates continuously from the cranium, through the spinal canal, down to the sacrum, and back again—forming a closed and self-regulating fluid system.

-The Craniosacral Rhythm

CSF moves in a subtle rhythmic pattern—expanding and contracting in cycles.

This gentle motion, known as the craniosacral rhythm, occurs approximately 6–12 times per minute.

This rhythm is independent of respiration and heartbeat, and it is often described as a reflection of the body’s innate life energy.

The micro-movements of the cranial bones and sacrum play a key role in maintaining this rhythm. However, misalignments in the skull, restrictions in the spine, or tension in the fascia and nervous system can disrupt this delicate flow, causing stagnation and imbalance within the craniosacral system.

-Chiropractic Approach to CSF Flow

Chiropractic adjustments aim to restore proper spinal alignment and nerve function, thereby supporting the smooth circulation of cerebrospinal fluid.

Specific focus is often placed on the upper cervical spine (Atlas and Axis) and the sacrum, both of which have significant influence on CSF movement.

By optimizing these regions, chiropractic care may help improve:

・Autonomic nervous system balance

・Brain detoxification and waste clearance

・Sleep quality and immune function

・Chronic fatigue, headaches, and stress response

- What is SOT (Sacro Occipital Technique)?

The Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT) is a gentle and highly specialized chiropractic method developed in the 1930s by Dr. M.B. DeJarnette. It focuses on restoring balance in the relationship between the sacrum and the occiput—the two ends of the spine that influence CSF flow and overall neural integrity.

A key feature of this technique is the use of SOT blocks, triangular wooden wedges placed under specific areas of the pelvis while the patient lies face down or face up.

By using the body’s own weight and gravity, the practitioner encourages:

・Restoration of natural sacral motion

・Improved cerebrospinal fluid circulation

・Normalization of nerve transmission

This process is non-forceful and self-corrective, allowing the body to realign itself naturally and safely.

-The Connection with Craniosacral Therapy

Building on the same physiological principles, Craniosacral Therapy has gained attention as a gentle manual technique that works directly with the CSF rhythm. Using subtle touch, the practitioner senses and follows the body’s inherent craniosacral motion, helping to release restrictions and restore natural fluid flow.

By doing so, it enhances the body’s innate self-healing capacity, promoting deep relaxation, balance, and restoration throughout the nervous system.

The flow of cerebrospinal fluid represents the “life current” that connects the brain and the body. Chiropractic care, especially techniques such as SOT, goes far beyond merely “aligning bones.”

It works to restore rhythmic harmony and fluid balance, supporting the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems as a unified whole.

By reestablishing this natural rhythm, the body regains its ability to self-regulate, recover, and thrive—leading not only to improved physical health but also to mental clarity and renewed vitality.
